Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting that Manny Ramirez will be sent to the Chicago White Sox today, in what will more than likely be a pure waiver claim.
The pure waiver claim means that the Dodgers will receive no players in return for releasing Ramirez, but that the White Sox will be obligated to pay Ramirez’s remaining $4.3 million dollar salary for 2010 (Ramirez is in the midst of a 2 year, $45 million contract).
Earlier Sunday night, there had been talks of other players being involved in the trade, which would have likely led to the Dodgers paying a portion of Ramirez’s salary, but those deals seemingly fell apart late Sunday evening.
Although he’s been hampered by injuries all season, Ramirez is batting .311 with 8 HR and 40 RBI in 66 games.
Sidenote: Yes…Manny Ramirez and Ozzie Guillen will be in the same clubhouse. It is a great time to be a beat writer covering the Chicago White Sox.
