It’s been a pretty good run for 2K sports newest basketball title, NBA 2K13. 2K Sports, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software is reporting that 2K13 has set a franchise-record for first week sales, selling 49% more copies than the previous fastest seller of the franchise, NBA 2k11.
2K sports attributes the growth to the expanding global popularity of the brand — which accounted for a 66% sales increase — and an improved online experience — the number of online users have doubled since last year’s iteration of the game. Also, the lack of competition certainly doesn’t hurt, either.
“Our early sales figures are a validation of our ongoing efforts to push this franchise to new heights,” said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “We owe it to our great fans to continually improve our title – year in and year out – and that’s exactly what we’ve done with NBA 2K13.”
2K13 was highly touted even before the game was launched, with music mogul Jay-Z serving as the game’s executive producer and helping to secure 1992’s “Dream Team” for this year’s title.
While it is interesting to note that 2K sports didn’t release any actual numbers regarding 2K13 and its release, one has to assume that they wouldn’t go through all of the trouble to make up specific statistics, right? Of course, maybe they’re still compiling the actual figures, in case they come under, scrutiny, who knows?
For the sake of comparison, NBA 2K11 has sold over 5.5 million units since its launch. If 2K13 can match those numbers, 2K sports will truly have another hit on their hands.
