Ever wanted to have your name on a race car? How good are you at computer games?
Mobil 1 and two of their technology partners, Stewart-Haas Racing and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, have teamed up to feature the names of 200 fans on their respective race cars. The No. 14 Mobile 1/ Office Depot Chevrolet and the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-27 will feature the names of 200 fans during NASCAR and Grand Prix races during the past weekend and next (the Advocare 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race and the United States Grand Prix race, respectively). And how did fans receive the honor of having their name shown to millions?
By dominating a computer game.
Mobil 1 Racing Academy, a free, online racing game from Mobile 1, is a racing simulation game offered by the company featuring NASCAR’s Tony Stewart and Formula 1’s Lewis Hamilton. Fans who achieved the top twenty scores for each month (May to September) were chosen and had their names infused onto the Mobil 1 logo on one of the vehicles driven by Stewart, Hamilton, or Jenson Button.
Tony Stewart, driver and co-team owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, said: “We have some of the best fans in NASCAR, and Stewart-Haas Racing is proud to work with our technology partner, Mobil 1, to bring fans an opportunity that money can’t buy. They might even bring us a little extra luck.”
Mobil 1 has even taken the time to not only display the names of the winning fans on the Logo tab of the USGP Fan Guide app on their Facebook page, they’ve also even sent direct messages to some lucky fans, prompting a great dialog back and forth between brand and consumer/fan. Its quite an interesting project, which promotes fan engagement and brand awareness while simultaneously promoting fan appreciation,
Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, said of the project: “Vodafone McLaren Mercedes fans are unlike any other in their dedication and knowledge of the sport, and it’s the support they give us that keeps us going and motivates us to win. We’re proud to carry their names on the McLaren MP4-27 in Austin as a wider thank-you to every fan that’s been behind us this year.”
A long-standing sponsor of motorsports, Mobil 1 began sponsoring the sport in 1978, and currently touts the title of the Official Motor Oil of NASCAR.
