BCS changes to Final Four seeded format?

| January 7, 2008 More

Stop. Read that headline again. Yeah, you read it right, the BCS might be changing their format. Although we wouldn’t seeBCS Logo any changes until at least 2010, and it still isn’t the playoff system that I believe a very large majority of America is clamoring for…it at least appears to be a definitive step in the right direction. The glimmer of hope came today, courtesy of the annual meeting of the Football Writers Association of America. From ESPN,

Each commissioner also stated that the SEC, ACC, Big East and Big 12 are open to discussing the “plus-one” format. The Big Ten and Pac-10 have been opposed to it.

Swofford, who is the incoming BCS chair, said the nature of the 2007 season and its weekly upheaval has motivated his presidents and athletic directors to reconsider a plus-one model.

“A lot of people look at it and say … maybe it would be better if more than two teams had the opportunity to play for the national championship,” Swofford said.

Ha! might be better if more than two teams had the opportunity to play for the National Championship? Think so?

Before everyone gets overly excited though, it looks like money may still be an issue.

Slive acknowledged “logistics” and multiple television agreements will take efforts to work through for the possible format to become a reality. Two years remain in the current BCS contract with Fox Sports.

I’ve already discussed the problems that seem to be hampering the BCS and any potential playoff, but as I said earlier, it is good to at least see a definitive step in the right direction. The best thing for the BCS right now? Parity in college football. The fact that there were so many upsets in the college football this season really has brought the whole idea of the +1 system to the forefront. If we can pull that off a few more years in a row? Then maybe we can discuss “playoffs” in 2010.

On a side note, by 2010, when will the national champion be decided? mid-January? Anybody else remember when this was settled on New Years Day?

Ohio State and LSU play to decide this year’s national champion on Fox…on January 7th. Enjoy the game folks.

  1. Yes, I remember the Cotton Bowl starting off New Year’s Day…followed by the Fiesta and Rose Bowls mid-day…and the Sugar and Orange Bowls finishing up the greatest day/night of the year (on the first day of the year!) in grand style. You’d wake up the next day and the pollsters would have had their say overnight and the debate began. During the day, an upset or two would create even more interest in the later games…or the outcomes of at least two contests would sway voters one way or the other. Like most everything else, it was better back in the day.
