In the time it takes me to write this title, Asafa Powell can run 100 meters.
Today, in Rieti, Italy, Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell decided to go for a light run. In doing so, he set a new world record in the 100 meter dash (about 109 yards for those who aren’t accustomed to the metric system), posting a valid wind-aided time of 9.74 seconds. The best part? Powell thinks he can still run faster.
“This means that I can do even 9.68. I’m worth that time, I know it….I made a couple of mistakes and I corrected them…That’s what happens when I start to listen to the coach.”
Powell, who had set and tied the previous world record, 9.77 seconds, on three different occasions should be very exciting to watch during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Asafa Powell is represented by very well-known track and field coach, Paul Doyle of the Doyle Management Group. Powell doesn’t seem to have much by the way of endorsements yet, although he is sponsored by Nike, and a Jamaican cable company, I foresee Doyle doing even bigger things in the future, for the world’s fastest man. I mean, he should at least be able to get Coors Light commercial, like Michael Johnson, right?
