Jenny Craig…the newest reason for the Clippers woes.
Athletes are always hawking products. Shoes, Cars, Car Accessories, Food, Clothing, Weight Loss Drinks…
Wait…what?
L.A. Clippers Guard Baron Davis is apparently endorsing Jenny Craig weight loss drinks. More from Sports By Brooks (via NY Daily News),
The Clippers’ Baron Davis is getting paid $250,000 for endorsing a weight-reduction drink. The Clippers privately say that the weight Davis gained to do the endorsement accounted for his slow start. Having signed him to a five-year deal with $62.5 million guaranteed, you can see how they’re not very thrilled by that.
$250,000 for an athlete to endorse a weight-reduction drink? Is that even believable? I mean, far be it from me to tell Jenny Craig how to spend its money but…BD can’t get a professional trainer? BD can’t go to the team trainer? BD doesn’t play basketball over the summer to make sure his game doesn’t fall off? Seriously. Better still? He may have gained the weight on purpose…(via SBB & SLAM)
Celebrities are asked to gain (or lose) weight all the time, normally for movie roles that pay them tens of millions of dollars. The 29-year old Davis – who was already hefty by League standards – reportedly gained weight for a quarter of a million bucks. Awesome.
$250,000 to purposely gain weight, then use a product that probably won’t help you because you’ll be burning so many calories playing basketball everyday, that scrimping on a 200-calorie fat-free cheesecake wouldn’t make any difference…? Baron Davis and his agent, Todd Ramasar, might be geniuses.
This is definitely an interesting situation…clearly the Clippers want Baron Davis in the best possibly shape for their potential playoff (ha ha ha ha!) run this year. And the fact that he purposely gained weight to make a little cash on the side? Not the best way to start the season. It would certainly be interesting to see the language in Davis’ contract…Not that there would be a morals clause issue, per se, but perhaps some variation on a morals clause? Or maybe just a minor breach by not being ready to adequately perform at the time of performance? Who knows.

I remember hearing about this at the end of the summer and couldn’t believe it. Jenny Craig and the NBA does NOT feel like an authentic fit at all. When I was hearing about this, I thought, would an NBA player like Baron Davis really take Jenny Craig weight-loss drinks when he probably has enough money to hire 5 personal chefs and trainers to help him lose the weight in a more healthy way? I don’t think so…
This was the reason that Dan Patrick left ESPN. On his radio program, he said that ESPN/Disney asked him to gain weight to take it off with Nutisystems. Just like Golic and Boomer, but he refused. It was an integrity issue. I’d have to say, I don’t blame him, and I think less of Golic, Berman, AND Baron Davis for it.
