Steelers live blog: Steelers vs. Bengals

Pretty important game for the Steelers today, as they take on the Bengals. The Steelers (4-2) can really take the Bengals out of the division rather quickly with a loss today. The Bengals (2-4), on the other hand, will be right back in the swing of things if they can pull of a victory…Here we go…

1:07 – Pretty uneventful first drive for the Steelers. Marvel Smith is still false starting on just about every play, and for some reason it isn’t being called. Lets see how the defense holds up against the Bengals offense. If we don’t get pressure on Palmer, he’s going to pick us apart, so I hope that some of our blitzes get near him…

1:10 – Our first blitz of the day…doesn’t get to Palmer, Palmer to Johnson for a 9 yard gain.

1:14 – The Bengals are moving the ball at will. Our Cover 2, which we have to play because of lousy corner back play, is getting exposed. Palmer has time to throw to two smart receivers, so…we really won’t have a chance to stop them, unless something starts to change.

1:17 – We managed to hold the Bengals to only a field goal. Carson Palmer was 6-7 on the drive. That probably doesn’t bode to well for the rest of the game.

1:21 – Cue first Heineken commercial of the day. Only 13 more to go.

1:22 – Flash to Tomlin. His hair looks like its holding up well in the Cincinnati weather.

1:24 – Beautiful audible by Roethlisberger. He switched it up and sent Holmes deep, and its good for 40…until the Bengals challenged it.

1:28 – Wow, we got away with one. I guess they’re saying that there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call. I’ll take it regardless.

1:30 – The Bengals don’t want to cover Hines Ward. How do I know? because Roethlisberger just threw him a 21 yard TD pass that I would have caught. 7-3 Steelers after the extra point by Sweet Hips.

1:34 – After review, why was that TD so easy? The Bengals had 10 men on the field. Silly Bungals.

1:38 – Some attempted fireworks by the Bengals, but nothing panned out. They will have 4th down when the second quarter begins. After the first quarter, its 7-3 Steelers.

1:42 – Heath Miller fails to get the recognition he deserves. Ben can literally just throw it up on any sort of post route or anything and Miller will catch it. He just did it again for a nice Steelers first down. We’re moving fairly well on this drive, as we’re now inside Bengals territory.

1:45 – Does anybody avoid sacks better than Roethlisberger? He just did it again, completing a first down pass to Holmes with a Bengals defender literally around his ankles.

1:48 – TD to Ward again…Roethlisberger is looking magnificent. Marvel Smith had another false start on the TD catch, but I’ve decided in my head that there is some league rule that just prevents false starts on Marvel Smith from being called.

1:52 – Nothing kills momentum faster than a good return. Looks like Ricardo Colcough, who had an angle, tripped, and the Bengals are all the way up to midfield.

1:58 – That whole bad kick return coverage thing is coming into play now, as the Bengals are driving inside the 10. Holding the Bengals to a field goal here will be pretty crucial. And, as usual, I think its going to come down to our cornerback play….

2:00 – …which held up. DeShea Townsend made a nice tackle on Reggie Kelly a yard and a half before the first down marker. Time out Bengals, they want to talk their options over.

2:02 – Cue up horrible Coors light commercials. My goodness I hate those. Marvin Lewis decided to kick the field goal. 14-6 Steelers. The Bengals fans are pretty excited pissed about the decision to not go for it.

2:07 – Great read by Parker on a sprint draw that looks like it was possibly supposed to go right, and Parker took it left…32 yards later, the Steelers have 3 time outs, and 2 minutes to work with on the Bengals 35 yard line.

2:12 – Time out Steelers. Man, Roethlisberger looks very, very sharp. 12/16 158 yards, 2 TD’s, and the Steelers are in the red zone again (the 13 yard line) with 71 seconds to go in the half.

2:19 – Gutsy call by Tomlin. A run with Willie Parker with 9 seconds to go in the half gets the Steelers a momentum building TD. 21-6 Steelers at the half (:04 seconds left)

2:39 – You know, I was just thinking about how few penalties had been called in this game. Cue Steelers penalty for blocking in the back. But hey, at least we got the ball back!

2:47 – Yet another nice play by Roethlisberger, breaking away from a sack and completing a pass to Heath Miller. Roethlisberger is now over 10,000 passing yards for his career. Congrats Big Ben.

2:47 – Two nice runs in a row by Parker, as he goes over 100 yards for the 5th time this season.

2:50 – He was doing so well though. Roethlisberger scrambled and threw a pretty bad INT to Deltha O’ Neal, in the redzone no less. I’m pretty sure we were jinxed by Dick Enberg and Randy Cross, who repeatedly talked about our scoring 11 TD’s in a row in the red zone. Thanks a bunch guys.

2:51 – Cue Bengals Storm Trooper. Pretty impressive costume.

2:55 – Chad Johnson just dropped his second long pass of the game. This one went off his chest.

3:00 – Big play for the Bengals, as Chad Johnson redeems himself on a 4th & 7 with about a 15 yards completion…that is being challenged by Coach Tomlin…and was upheld.

3:09 – The Bengals are trying to make a game of it. TD pass from Palmer to Houshamama makes it 21-13 Steelers, with 13 minutes left in the game.

3:18 – DRAMA! Did Roethlisberger throw it or not?? (he did) All of the Bengals fans, of course, are up at arms, but this is a pretty easy call here. The ball was clearly coming forward. And yes, this was off of an attempted flea-flicker, thank you for asking.

3:19 – Huge first down by Roethlisberger. Again escaping the sack (he really might be the hardest QB to tackle in the NFL once you get a hold of him), and finding Holmes across the field to move the chains.

3:24 – Steelers playing for points on 3rd and 6, running a draw to Davenport that falls a yard short of a first down. Sweet Hips with the 40 yard field goal, making the score 24-13 Steelers.

3:30 – The Bengals aren’t wasting any time. A long pass to Houshamama and a 10 yard Watson run has the Bengals at the Steelers 35 with just under 5 minutes to go in the game.

3:34 – James Harrison forced a fumble? (maybe?) and it appears the Steelers have recovered. Kenny Watson got hurt on the play, and Lewis challenged the play, so…its commercial time now. I’m sure Dick Enberg will shed light on everything once the game comes back on.

3:37 – Steelers ball. Looks like this one is pretty much wrapped up.

3:50 – Its over 24-13 Steelers. 5-2 is our record, Baltimore is in second place with a 4-3 record (but they’re 0-2 in the division). Speak of the devil, they’re up next week.
