Steroids vs. everything else.

Dennis Miller has a new show that comes on the Versus Network (the place that shows all of the hockey!) on Tuesday nights, called Sports Unfiltered.

One of his most recent episodes dealt with the topic of steroids. Below, you’ll see a clip of one of Miller’s rants on the topic.

He says it in a comedic way, but he brings up a very good point. It seems like today’s athlete can be forgiven for everything (spousal abuse, alcohol, fighting, etc.) except steroids. Remember when Robbie Alomar spit on an umpire during a Blue Jays game? When Sammy Sosa’s bat was corked? Brett Myers off the field incidents with his wife? The reports of A-Rod cheating on his wife? Seems like the baseball community will forgive athletes in every situation except for steroid usage (exception: Pete Rose).

In this country, where we seem to give everyone a second chance, what is it about steroids that won’t let us forgive? Why have steroids become the “unforgivable crime”? Is it just because of the cheating? I doubt it. Baseball has had plenty of cheaters from pine tar incidents, emery boards, corked bats, Vaseline; all of those incidents were forgotten about and forgiven. So what’s left? the fact that athletes are altering their bodies? Maybe, but isn’t that same goal achieved from weight lifting or taking supplements and such? And if you’re saying, “No, they’re different, because those athletes on steroids are cheating” then I refer you back to the beginning of this paragraph. The only answer I can think of at the moment, is that those athletes who have been accused of using steroids have yet to actually come out and say “I used steroids, I’m sorry”. Is that what America is waiting for? The public apology? Or is it something else? leave your comment on the matter below.
