The Seattle Sonics have just debuted a new site, Supersonics.com, that they say is the “first Flash-driven site in major professional team sports.” The site took 2,000 hours and $100K to build, and it’s certainly a unique experience. “It is a much more immersive and high fidelity experience,” said Cypress Consulting founder Nate Thompson, the Seattle-based company that helped a Sonics developer build the site. The Sonics, meanwhile, say it’s “a whole new paradigm in how sports team present their brands.”

Wow. The site definitely looks impressive, although it seems like this could alienate some users. What if you’re a Sonics fan with dial up? or 256MB of RAM? or you have Microsoft Word open at the same time? You might have some problems with finding out how many points per game Kevin Durant is averaging in that case…

I have to give the Sonics credit for being “ahead of the game” but I’m not sure if they didn’t jump a little too far into the future. I’m sure that some Sonics fan, somewhere, is still using Windows ’95.
