The price is right for Troy Tulowitzki

Yes kids, if you turn one unassisted triple play, hit .291/24/99 and do an excellent job fielding at the shortstop position, you too can make baseball history.

The Denver Post is reporting that the Rockies are putting the finishing touches on a contract extension with shortstop TroyTroy Tulowitzki [From Longbeachstate.com] Tulowitzki, a deal that will pay him around $30 million dollars over 6 years, with a club option. Once the deal is finalized, it will be the largest deal for any player with under two full years of experience, the previous deal being Grady Sizemore’s 6 year, $23.45 million dollar deal he signed with the Cleveland Indians in 2006. Tulowitzki was in the middle of his rookie deal, on which he still had 5 years, so this 6 year deal looks to allow the Rockies to avoid salary arbitration and free agency and keep Tulowitzki in Colorado for years to come.

Good for Tulowitzki. I didn’t see a lot of Rockies games over the past season, but Troy looks like he is a great young cornerstone to build a team around. If he continues to play the kind of defense he played last year, and hits around .300/25/100? The Rockies will be in the playoff hunt for years to come.

An interesting note…Although you can’t properly compare the two, it’s still noteworthy to compare Tulowitzki’s deal (6 year/30 million) to the deal Washington Capitals Forward Alexander Ovechkin (13 year/124 million) signed last week. Tulo’s deal is paying him 5 million a year, while Ovechkin’s is paying him between 9 and 10 million a year. Ovechkin is arguably one of the five best players in his sport, and Tulo is a young, still unproven player, who has loads of potential. So my question is…If Ovechkin was one of the five best players in baseball, how much would he make? And how much would Tulo make if he played hockey?

…yes, you are thinking what I’m thinking. The hockey marketing brain trust still has a long way to go, but as I’ve mentioned previously, at least thing are looking up.

  1. I think the Rockies did a great job on this one, locking Troy up. I saw him quite a bit down the pennant stretch and was very impressed with his maturity for a player with so little experience. Good for Colorado. Meanwhile here in Philly, the Ryan Howard arbitration really looks like it will come to pass, creating nothing but ill will between their superstar and themselves…and the fans of course.
