WNBA Fever…Catch it! Outdoors…if you want to.
The WNBA’s New York Liberty and Indiana Fever will play the first outdoor regular season game in professional basketball history. From the Sports Network,
The Liberty Outdoor Classic will take place at the home of the US Open — Arthur Ashe Stadium — in Flushing, New York on July 19.
“The Liberty Outdoor Classic will be an extraordinary experience for everyone in attendance — it will bring all of us back to our roots, celebrate the enormous growth and interest in the women’s game and provide an opportunity to gain unprecedented exposure for Liberty basketball and the WNBA.”
The Liberty Outdoor Classic. Pretty nice ring to it. Two observations…First, the WNBA draft was today…some girl was picked first…Candace something. Candace Parker! Yes, to the LA Sparks. The WNBA is not exactly full of star power (name somebody on the New York Liberty. Go ahead, I’ll wait. I only know two players on Indiana’s Roster, Tameka Catchings and Alison Bales), so why didn’t they wait a couple of weeks to see how the draft panned out, before making their decision on the game’s participants? You have arguably the two biggest names in the WNBA, Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie, on the same team, and neither of them are playing in the event that the WNBA is using to garner interest, ala outdoor hockey. Secondly, David Stern, where are you? Are the men afraid to play outside? Will the wind effect their jumpers too much? I wouldn’t mind seeing Suns vs. Mavericks outdoors. Steve Nash and Jason Kidd playing “street ball”? That sounds like good stuff.

Jessica Davenport is a NY Liberty. She used to be a Buckeye too. Maybe that’s why I know this.
