The Asian Games closing ceremony trumpeted to a successful end on Saturday.  The Guangzhou, China event is boasting that it has raised three billion yuan ($454 million) in sponsorship from over 50 companies.  This sponsorship list includes: Guangzhou Auto Group (domestic producers of Hyundai), Samsung Electronics, 361 Degrees (a popular sportswear apparel company), China Mobile, China Southern Airlines and TCL.  This figure is five times greater than the previous Asian Games held in Doha in 2006.  With some events seeing small attendance numbers this figure is a welcomed sign to event organizers, as it will offset almost a third of the costs (approx. 10 billion yuan) of the Games.

During the closing ceremony, Olympic Council of Asia president, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah told the more than 30,000 athletes, fans, volunteers, officials and fans in attendance that “this was the best Asian Games.”

To place the numbers in perspective, the 2008 Beijing Olympics brought in 20.5 billion yuan from their marketing efforts.
