We are about a month removed from the XXX Olympic games.  That being said, this guest post looks back at some of the moments that helped make the 30th Summer Olympics one of the most memorable ever.

Before the 2012 Olympics was held in London, UK there were many who doubted the ability of the English capital to cope with such a prestigious event. Of course these fears were soon allayed and now, after the event, we can look back at some of the truly breathtaking moments of the Olympic Games in London. From the opening ceremony through the team events and into the stadium for the individual athletics; there was never a dull moment. We even managed to see a fantastic fireworks display and the Spice Girls reunited.

That being said, what are some of the other memorable events?

Well it’s always best to start at the beginning and before a single athlete had even entered the scene we had the Queen of England, skydiving from a helicopter and Mr. Bean playing the theme of Chariots of Fire with one finger. David Beckham drove a speed boat along the river Thames and very early on there was tribute to BBC’s radio four’s shipping forecast. The NHS’s dancing nurses were actual real life nurses that would soon be returning to their day job tending to Britain’s poor people. The whole thing was bizarre and yet breathtaking in its fun and unusual way. Many wondered whether the rest of the world would understand the “in jokes”, but in truth there was rarely time to think let alone worry.

And then? There were the athletes.

After a poor start Phelps showed his Olympian class by becoming the finest of all time.  While breaking records and winning medals might not be as easy as it used to be he still has the class when it is needed. Of course, every Olympic enthusiast simply could not wait for the arrival of Usain Bolt as we all hoped he’d return to his previous Olympic form.  He somehow managed to go above and beyond expectations.   He won the 100m and 200m sprints, the first person ever to do so in one Olympics, and then broke the world record time when winning the 100m team relay event.

Then there was the amazing display of horizontal bar genius when the Dutchman Epke Zonderland showed us a perfect routine with every move possible and became an instant hit with the YouTube generation. For the home team there was hardly a dry eye in the house when Jessica Ennis won the heptathlon Gold medal. There was a lot of pressure on the British athletics poster girl and she came through every trial with her head held high. The noise in the arena was simply astounding and showed what was to come as the 80,000 strong crowd rallied together to push their girl on to victory.

One of the most breathtaking things of all was the humility and dedication shown by all of the Olympians that participated in the games. Names such as Mo Farah, the Brownlee brothers and Jade Jones became local heroes along with many others as everybody got into the spirit of the games.

Finally the closing ceremony calmed everybody down with a massive party showing some of the UK’s greatest talent for entertainment both past and present. Everything ran like clockwork and the pride that the games brought to the British Isles could be seen on every face.  In retrospect, its hard to ponder how anyone ever had any doubts about London’s ability to host the world’s greatest event.  It was truly an amazing seventeen days.
