When the best college basketball teams hit the hardwood next month, sports bettors in Illinois will finally have the opportunity to hit moneyline, point spreads, totals and other wagers on the games of March Madness.

State officials announced that legalized sports betting within the state would go live in time for bettors to place wagers on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Sports betting was legalized in Illinois in June of 2019. Last month, licenses to operate legal sportsbooks within the state were issued to the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, the Argosy Casino in Alton, and the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin. Both in person and online wagering will be offered at all three locations.

Gross sports betting at the three venues will be taxed at a rate of 25 percent. Wagering will be prohibited on minor league teams and all high school events, as well as any college game that involving a school from Illinois.
